Student Loan Debt Reform & Forgiveness
College has become unaffordable for too many families, and student loan debt is preventing millions of Americans from building financial stability.
As someone who graduated graduate school with $75,000 in student loan debt, I understand this burden firsthand. When my husband and I bought our home in 2018, I was told my name might not even be able to go on the mortgage because my debt-to-income ratio was so high. Even today, I still have to prove that I am enrolled in an income-driven repayment plan.
No one should be forced to pay $600 to $1,000 a month in student loans and still be expected to afford a home, a car, or raise a family.
As a Member of Congress, I will fight for:
-
Automatic enrollment into an Income-Driven Repayment Plan (IDR) once students graduate and begin working
-
A cap ensuring student loan payments are no more than 10% of income
-
Permanent placement in IDR so borrowers are not forced to reapply every year
-
Full student loan forgiveness after 20 years of repayment
Education should be a pathway to opportunity—not a lifetime sentence of debt.
